Advanced Ultra-High-Temperature Ceramics for Sustainable Future

There are several applications of ceramics for a greener future. The increase in the operating temperature of a solar tower light absorber will improve its efficiency making renewable energy generation sustainable and profitable. Ceramic car engines can almost nullify pollution.

Ultra-high-temperature ceramics for solar light absorbers

We used in-situ formed carbon nanostructures (see the SEM image) to improve the thermal shock resistance of
TiB2-SiC-Graphene UHTC.
On the graph, you can see the crack growth when quenching the heated samples into water. The horizontal axis presents the heating temperature. Different curves correspond to the different carbon nanostructure content. The cracks almost stop growing at 26% of carbon even if quenched from 700 °C!
